SAN FRANCISCO -- Jesus Guzman got to see plenty of pitches, thanks to Tommy Medica. White Nike Air Max 2018 . That helped when he stepped to the plate a little later. Guzman, Chris Denorfia and Jedd Gyorko each homered and drove in two runs and the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 9-3 on Saturday. Medica singled after a 14-pitch at bat, with Guzman watching intently from the on-deck circle. Guzman then homered in a four-run fourth inning. "I saw a lot of pitches and I hit it good," Guzman said. "He made the pitcher throw a lot of pitches and then he gets the hit." Hunter Pence, who reached a tentative agreement on a $90 million, five-year contract before the game, hit a two-run homer for the Giants. San Francisco had won three in a row. Eric Stults (11-13) pitched seven effective innings to win his third straight start after going 0-6 in his previous 10 starts. He also helped himself with an RBI single during a four-run fourth. "I made some adjustments and was able to follow through on them," Stults said. "Every player wants to end on a good note and sometimes you have to battle the storm a little and keep pushing through." Stults allowed three runs on seven hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out three. Yusmeiro Petit (4-1) lasted a season-low 3 2-3 innings, giving up five runs and seven hits. "I felt good all the way around," Petit said. "This is a learning experience for me because when I get into big trouble I have to find a way to get out of it." Luke Gregerson pitched the eighth and Nick Vincent worked the ninth. The Padres are a game ahead of the Giants in third place in the NL West. Denorfia led off the game with his career-best 10th home run. Angel Pagan doubled to open the bottom of the first and scored when Sandoval doubled with two outs. Pence hit his 27th homer in the third to put the Giants ahead 3-1. His homer total is the highest for the Giants since Barry Bonds hit 28 in 2007. Petit retired the first two batters in the fourth and then gave up six consecutive hits, including the long at bat by Medica, before being replaced by George Kontos. "He was throwing everything," Medica said. "He kept making good pitches and I was fortunate to keep getting a piece of them until I finally got one fair." Chase Headley doubled ahead of Medica. Guzman hit his homer and consecutive singles from Alexi Amarista, Chris Robinson, making his first major league start, and Stults produced another run and ended Petits day. Stults, who retired his last nine hitters, threw a career-high 203 2-3 innings this season. "Its definitely a milestone," Stults said. "The goal was to make it through the season healthy and try to be reliable." The Padres added four runs in the ninth on Gyorkos 22nd home run, a two-run shot, and RBI singles from Denorfia and Reymond Fuentes. Gyorko has the most home runs by a rookie second baseman since Dan Uggla hit 27 for the Marlins in 2006. Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca. I will keep this very simple. Please explain how Brendan Gallaghers goal was disallowed in Tuesdays game between the Devils and Canadiens. Thank you for your time,Brad Greuel Brad: The very simple answer is that, in the collective judgment of the men staffing the NHL Situation Room last night where majority rules, it was decided that Brendan Gallagher used his right skate to kick the puck into the net! I, like you Brad and many other fans that tweeted their confusion following this decision, am still attempting to find clear evidence of the distinct kicking motion that Brendan Gallagher is claimed to have used to boot the puck into the net. This review further demonstrates the wide differences in judgment that can result from one person to another when making officiating specific decisions. Since video review is not an exact science, sometimes there is no clear cut right or wrong answer for these men to make. Whenever that occurs, their decision becomes "inconclusive." The call is then thrown back to the referee on the ice for his final decision on the matter; which in almost every case would revert to the refs initial call. On this play, the decision on the ice was that a legal goal had been scored by Brendan Gallagher. Once the play went to video review it didnt matter what the referee decided on the ice or what any of us elsewhere thought the call should be. The only judgment that counts is imposed by the men in the Situation Room in Toronto. Im not suggesting that video reviiew decisions are easy to make; especially for men that didnt have to make these types of decisions during their playing careers. Red Nike Air Max 2018. . Some plays are definitely more difficult than others to judge. It is for these very reasons that I continue to suggest video review should be conducted by the referees at ice level. Let them make the final decision since it is in their job description and more specifically what they are paid to do. It is also an added responsibility that I believe the referees would welcome. Im still looking for Brendan Gallaghers "distinct kicking motion" when he attempted to one-timer on Lars Ellers centering pass at the top of the goal crease after Martin Brodeur deflected the puck with his blocker. I saw the puck miss the forward motion of Gallaghers stick, hit his shin pad and rest well behind his body mass near his right skate blade and as he battled for position in tight quarters with Devils defenceman Andy Greene. Im still looking for that distinct kicking motion as Gallagher rotated his body in a spinning pivot move to reset himself following the wide stance one-time shot attempt. Yes, I do see the puck contact Gallaghers back skate blade positioned well behind his body and through this natural move with Greene on his right shoulder. The puck does accelerate as a result of Gallaghers rotational spin and passes between Brodeurs legs and into the net. I see referee Tom Kowal signal a goal from near perfect position with a very good sightline. Sorry Brad, youll have to bear with me as the play goes to video review; Im still looking for a "distinct kicking motion!" ' ' '
